Who Owns Your Website? 6 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Web Designer

Before you hire a web designer, ask who owns your domain, hosting, and site files. Six questions that protect your business, plus the red flags to watch for.
Questions to ask a web designer about website ownership

Here is a story I hear more often than I would like. A business owner hires someone to build their website. A few years later, they want to make changes, switch designers, or move on. Then they find out they cannot. The domain is registered in the old designer’s name. The hosting account is theirs too. And the designer stopped answering email a year ago.

It happens to good businesses all the time, and it is completely avoidable. Before you sign anything, ask these six questions.

1. Whose Name Is the Domain Registered In?

Your domain is your address online. It is the thing on your business cards, your truck, and every review link. If it is registered in someone else’s name, they control it, even if you paid for it.

What you want to hear: “The domain is registered in your name, under your account. We can manage it for you, but you own it.”

If your domain is already registered, you can usually check who holds it by logging into the registrar where it was purchased. If you have never logged in, or do not know which registrar it is, that is worth finding out this week.

2. Who Owns the Hosting Account?

Hosting is where your website actually lives. Some designers bundle hosting into a monthly fee under their own account, which is fine as long as you understand what happens if you leave.

What you want to hear: either “the hosting account is in your name,” or a clear explanation of how your site gets moved to you if you ever part ways.

3. Do I Own the Website Files and Content When It Is Done?

The design, the pages, the photos, and the words on your site should belong to you once the project is paid for. Some agencies build on systems you cannot take with you, or keep the rights to the design.

What you want to hear: “Once the final payment is made, the site is yours.”

4. What Happens If We Stop Working Together?

This is the question most people forget to ask, and it tells you the most about who you are hiring. A good answer is calm and specific. A vague or uncomfortable answer is a red flag.

What you want to hear: “Everything goes with you. We hand over the logins, the files, and anything else you need.”

5. Will I Lose My Google Rankings If You Rebuild My Site?

If your current website ranks for anything, a careless rebuild can wipe that out. Rankings are usually lost during a redesign for predictable reasons: pages get new addresses, old links break, and content that Google liked gets removed.

What you want to hear: “We map every existing page to its new home and set up redirects before launch, so the rankings your old site earned carry over.”

That process is called redirect mapping. If your designer has never heard of it, keep looking.

6. Is SEO Built In, or Added Later?

A website can look beautiful and still be nearly invisible on Google. Search visibility depends on how the site is built: its heading structure, page organization, speed, and how clearly each page explains what it is about. Those are much harder to fix after the fact.

What you want to hear: that search is part of the plan from the first conversation, not an add-on after launch.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • The designer registers your domain “to make it easier” and keeps it in their name
  • Nobody can clearly explain what happens if you leave
  • Your site is built on a proprietary system you cannot move
  • Monthly fees with no explanation of what you are paying for
  • A redesign with no plan for your existing pages and rankings

None of these automatically mean someone is dishonest. Plenty of designers set things up this way out of habit. But you deserve to know before you sign, not after.

How We Handle It

At Byte of Inspiration Digital, the answer to all six questions is simple. You own your domain, your hosting, your content, and your website. We work inside your accounts, not ours, and if you ever leave, everything goes with you. We also map and redirect every existing page before launch, so a new site does not cost you the rankings your old one earned.

If you are not sure who owns your current website, we are happy to help you find out, even if you never hire us.
